But, then neither of those molds showed up in the 2005 Winter Ops pack. I also remember the announced wave 5 pack Iceberg and Deep Freeze (what that it?), that was cancelled because they overshipped Whiteout and Big Ben.A-Mannoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1730351558727980814.post-74341775285258367442016-07-26T16:03:37.093-07:002016-07-26T16:03:37.093-07:00As someone who missed out on collecting Joe entire...As someone who missed out on collecting Joe entirely in 2000, i appreciate you shedding light on this era. My return to Joe didn't come about until somewhere in the middle of the DTC stuff. Once i gave up on modern Joes a couple years back, i decided to try my hand at collecting a little of the items i never had before circa 97-2001. I have yet to dip my toes in the 97-98 collection at all, but the ARAHC figures are fascinating to me. I was fortunate enough to pick up several carded sets for around 7 bucks a piece at comic shop and i was quite happy with them all. But aside from Dial Tone having found his way to a razor, this Leatherneck was the most jarring reimagining of a character that i picked up. I didn't have to live through mold burn out with this guy as you guys did, so it was new enough to me. It just doesn't scream Leatherneck. Why he wasn't given a new code name and pushed as a new character eludes me. And, as someone who doesn't have an 86 Leatherneck, this guy still does not do the trick. the brian viperhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12584748652867285818noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1730351558727980814.post-41703306431137718332016-07-26T09:18:59.836-07:002016-07-26T09:18:59.836-07:00I use this guy as a different character altogether...I use this guy as a different character altogether, named 'Swamp Stomp'. They really should have made him a new character back then. But you are definitely right about the accessory bit. I would correct that one sentence, as not only the Duke rifle, but the knife from that same figure made a return.Mr. Acerhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10751958390143980888noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1730351558727980814.post-22611146857921917752016-07-26T08:19:28.609-07:002016-07-26T08:19:28.609-07:00It was harder to see at the time. But, vintage Jo...It was harder to see at the time. But, vintage Joes really did regress. '97's had their issues, but the accessories were mostly there and the paint apps were plentiful. '98 was the, in my opinion, the pinnacle with great molds, high quality, excellent accessories and convention level paint applications. ARAHC started the regression with recycled parts, some generic accessories and missing paint. Then, the TRU stuff rebounded on paint applications, but skimped on gear. At least until they got silly in '05.

Of the hundreds of figs they released in that era, only a handful really hold up well. The rest are a mix of bad or just kind of...there.Robot_Sonichttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14046347432548886565noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1730351558727980814.post-63332809482169566772016-07-26T08:16:09.787-07:002016-07-26T08:16:09.787-07:00That Crimson Viper was a big deal in the community...That Crimson Viper was a big deal in the community back then. The Steel Brigade came out and said they'd give people 1000 Crimson Vipers if they were released. Then, the Club released them and they backtracked with what would become standard club doublespeak. I suspect that the Viper was originally planned for that set. But, the convention set happened and the figure got moved and replaced.

I found some old photos of these waves, recently, too. The Laser Viper was originally silver like the Lamprey. Kind of cool. One reason why I skipped getting that set.

Just using thie figure head over Downtown's would've been a big improvement for the :greenshirts" (I dislike that term).

I wondered if this figure was meant to be someone else, but I guess it was always gonna be Leatherneck. I was looking through an old Previews from 2001. They list Zartan & Crimson Viper, Outback & Tripwire, Gung-Ho & Leatherneck. Plus Wet-Suit and Skimmer, Barricade and Crossfire, Lowlight and Surefire, Destro and Fastblast Viper, Cobra Commander and Laser Viper. Now it's easy to see some name changes happened, but CRIMSON VIPER? (I assume "Barricade" was Roadblock's mold, since he used that name on Chinese packages, I think.)A-Mannoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1730351558727980814.post-17720999172001856172016-07-26T05:33:35.701-07:002016-07-26T05:33:35.701-07:00Great pics!

It's better than a lot of the 02-06 Era, but the drop off in effort (not quality) from the 97-98 lines is far more apparent now than it seemed in 2001.

It's not a good sign when the Joes look more alike than the Cobras.
R.T.G.noreply@blogger.com
