For $13, I can get them one G.I. Joe "retro" figure. Or, for $13, I can 2 figures of similar quality and articulation, a bunk bed and a locker or for $20, I can get 5 of those figures with tons of gear, or a single figure with an tank or three figures with a huge watchtower.

My kids have never heard of Snake Eyes or Duke or Cobra. They want toys. And, for $100, I can get them an army with several vehicles and playsets. Or, I can get 6 retro Joe figures. And we wonder why kids don't buy brands any more....Robot_Sonichttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14046347432548886565noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1730351558727980814.post-88598873270743323062020-08-19T09:54:04.805-07:002020-08-19T09:54:04.805-07:00I tried Sgt. The scale and the design annoyed me too much, those plastic ball joint hips suck. They still do. All to save costs on that o-ring and metal t- bar, no doubt. It's a shame, I liked the theme and the figures were mostly good on paint ops. I understand the scale given, aside from the CORPS, GI JOE was probably the smallest figure centric boy's toy line on the market at the time. But I still wish they had not.

According to at least one former Hasbro person, the line did do well enough to continue, but Kenner wasn't about to make figures in the Hasbro style. Like you, I recall seeing gobs of wave 1 of Sgt Savage figures at discount. So I'm skeptical of that statement.

I wonder if Sgt. Savage would've fared much better after the post Saving Private Ryan World War 2 boom. But at the time HASBRO was still trying to make 12" a thing with both aging collectors and kids, actual characters be damned aside from half-arsed TRU exclusive ARAH offering. (Where clueless Hasbro overshipped Oktober Guard and undershipped Cobra Infantry...thought TRU might have had a say in that).

Getting back to Hasbro's dropping the ball. It could've had some potential if it were retooled for 3 3/4" figures in the 2000's, like what Hasbro did with those Sigma 6 mech.

The Sgt. Savage line was astoundingly bad. The concept and themes were sorta fun, but the figures were beyond salvage. In my experience a lot of them were so brittle they made Estrela figures seem durable by comparison. I still have the unused sheet somewhere in the garage.

You can really see that this vehicle is the missing link between the vintage vehicles and the new items that appeared in the early 2000's. They tried to make it realistic, but had to make it a toy, too, and you get this weird hybrid.Robot_Sonichttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14046347432548886565noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1730351558727980814.post-15091859777240849072020-08-18T06:21:15.050-07:002020-08-18T06:21:15.050-07:00Wow that thing is kinda ugly.Did it come with deca...Wow that thing is kinda ugly.Did it come with decals? It "looks" like a toy rather than the toy model aesthetic of the early 82 ARAH line.Yeah, not a fan.Joerizzo2025https://www.blogger.com/profile/08178783120454637064noreply@blogger.com
