Sometimes, a simple repaint creates a fig for the ages. In the case of the 2006 Operation Flaming Moth Shipwreck, what should have been a mundane repaint brought new life to the character and gave collectors a great update to two vintage molds. The combo of Cutter and Shipwreck gives collectors a version of a classic character that no longer looks like a reject from the Village People. Collectors have adopted this version as a de facto original and made him a popular visage for the Shipwreck character. Here's some of this figure's best content from around the web.

I found out about the Operation Flaming M.O.T.H. Shipwreck a few years ago, as I think it was through a Joe A Day Posting. I really do like this look for the character, as it does make sense for him to have a Life Jacket, especially if he's on any sea craft. And it just a simple change of the top really. It takes the classic look of the character, and makes him look a bit more better I think. While I don't think I'd ever really need it, if I want to get a O-ring Sailor Shipwreck, I think this is the 1 I'd like to get.
ReplyDeleteDuring the 25th Anniversary line, they did do a Shipwreck with a Life Jacket(Which can be removed) in 1 of the Comic Book 2 Packs, however, the colours of the basic Shipwreck figure was very different from his classic Sailor Colours, as the hat was Dark Blue, the T-Shirt White, and the Pants Black. I got this 2 pack, and eventhough I do like the Shipwreck, I do sometimes wish it was in his Classic Sailor Colours, but I'm guessing that the reason for this was so that the colours on this Comic Book 2 Pack is different from the Standard 25th Anniversary Single Card release at the time(And then later in a 25th Anniversary 5 Pack). For those curious, here's a link from YoJoe for pics and info on this 25th Anniversary Comic Book Shipwreck:

Having said that, now thinking about it, a part of me wonders if the Classic Colours wasn't used on the 25th Anniversary Comic Book 2 Pack Shipwreck, because maybe Hasbro wanted to save the Classic Colours for the G.I. Joe Collectors Club, incase they wanted to do the this Shipwreck with a Life Jacket in a 25th Anniversary Style homage to the Operation Flaming M.O.T.H. Shipwreck. Far as I can tell, the Club never released a 25th Anniversary Style Operation Flaming M.O.T.H. Shipwreck.
