Dial Tone is among my favorite figure molds. All of his releases have been solid. Just due to circumstances of acquisitions, though, this Sonic Fighters Dial Tone is my least favorite of his incarnations. It's still a great coloring of the mold. It's just that childhood nostalgia and early collector fandom left this version of the character caught in a weird middle ground where he lacks the emotional connection to really allow his quality to be his determining factor in my collection.
Fortunately, lots of other collectors do really like this figure and you can see how they use him in the content below. Enjoy!

This is actually my favorite paint job for the mold. It's a great color combination that really complements the well-sculpted figure. I highly recommend him.
ReplyDeleteThe best version of Dial Tone, imagine if they released this version in 86 instead with his backpack being silver
ReplyDeleteNot really a fan of Dial Tone in general but this is my favorite version of him as it were
ReplyDeleteI get the emotional connection argument, but objectively speaking, the Special Mission Brazil version is the worst coloring for this mold. I can't fathom what anyone was thinking with the color choices in that set. This version is certainly a big improvement over that.
ReplyDeleteThe Tiger Force repaint in 2003 is also an eyesore. Oh, and let's not forget the one from 2000 where they didn't bother to paint his mustache...
It's a fine figure for sure, but the blue color suggests Cobra. You really need only one Dial-Tone. I like the original the best. I also have the Tiger Force version, which makes more sense as a collector. Again, a decent figure it's just superfluous as a collector.
ReplyDeleteI've never understood the "no blue" argument that some people have for Joes. Yeah, blue is the color most closely associated with Cobra, but it's also an EXCEEDINGLY common color. Lots of Joes wear green, but I never hear people running down the Night Viper or Aero Viper because they have black and green uniforms.
DeleteIt's nothing I feel super passionate about or anything, but it's just a comment that I see time and time again anytime someone is talking about any Joe figure wearing blue...just seems like a simplistic way of looking at things.
“An idiot admires complexity, a genius admires simplicity, a physicist tries to make it simple, for an idiot anything the more complicated it is the more he will admire it, if you make something so clusterfucked he can't understand it he's gonna think you're a god cause you made it so complicated nobody can understand it. That's how they write journals in Academics, they try to make it so complicated people think you're a genius”

I contend Blue, especially on that particular Dial-Tone screams Cobra blue. You could easily put those legs and waist on an 86 Viper. Blue will ALWAYS be associated with Cobra. The Marvel comic made the blue look unusual and cool. The first Cobra soldiers and officers were not suited for any particular environment, but identifiable and slightly unique. Cobra Commander is still generally portrayed in blue to this day. The Night Viper WAS discolored, I never liked the green, the all black ones from the Black Major are the ones to get , I got a whole squad of them. As for the Aero-Viper a sky blue would have been cool to homage Starduster lmfao....
