In 1997, a scalp kiosk at a flea market on the other side of town had some carded Joes from China. He wanted way more than I wanted to pay for them. But, I remember seeing the Flint figure and thinking what a cool weapon was included with him. (I didn't realize it was the Headhunter shotgun at the time as I had never seen a Headhunter.) Fortunately, the advent of Ebay proved the figures were actually very common. So common that I could open a carded version and enjoy one of the cooler and better done foreign exclusive figures. Here's the best of the Chinese Flint from around the web.

I never made even a token effort to get this figure. Not sure why.
ReplyDeleteTrying to reach out to you, with Joeaday being on hiatus. Is there any way to contact you?
ReplyDeleteDefinitely. You can ping me on Twitter or on Facebook if you have those. I'm also active at og13 as Mike T. If that doesn't work, let me know here and I'll temporarily post an email address.
DeleteI'm the only person not on Twitter or Facebook, and I'm not on og13 either. Would you mind posting the e-mail?
ReplyDeleteThanks!

DeleteGot it. Thanks!
DeleteSuch an odd thing for them to do. I guess the mold was MIA, but was china such a market that they had to have a Flint that was close to the card art?
ReplyDeleteI’ve always assumed that the chinese releases we’re repurposed repaints/releases intended for 1995.
ReplyDeleteThe molds were all there to repaint this falcon in the 2000s, instead we got a convention exclusive nobody remembers.
What's cool about this Chinese Exclusive Tiger Force Flint, is that because they used the Falcon mold, you could either use it as a Tiger Force Flint or Tiger Force Falcon if you like. I'm taking a guess that at the time of production, China either couldn't find or get the Flint Mold and figured that since they had access to the Falcon mold, and Falcon also had a Beret, that it would be a good substitute. Or someone at the company that did Joes in China got confused with the 2 Beret Joes, and though Falcon was also Flint and used it. Regardless of the reason, still a neat and unique release over all, as it makes this extra special because of it.
ReplyDeleteJust only realized that only the head and arms were Falcon's, as the rest of the body is the Version 3 Dusty Mold. Now thinking about it, since Version 3 of Dusty had a Beret, I'm surprised they didn't just use the Dusty head as well. But regardless, my above comment still stands that it could be used as either Tiger Force versions of Flint(If you didn't have the regular Tiger Force Flint) or Falcon.
DeleteThe Chinese Bludd and Flint are weird figures. I've often wondered if they were planned for a late '94 or even a '95 release in the US. But, the line got cancelled and they got dropped into the Chinese assortment.
DeleteI have no reason to believe this. About the only possible connection is that the unreleased '95 unknown figure also uses Lamprey parts. But, the effort it took to create them for another market is weird.
Just curious - what's the plastic quality of the Chinese Joes? Similar to funskool? Or on par with Hasbro with different packaging? I've checked them out from time to time on Ebay but have yet to purchase any. Alot of cool variants (the Major Bludd figure lives rent free in my head, I think it's an awesome version). This version of Flint is also a great looking figure.
DeleteI'll have to go down the rabbit hole of all your international variant write-ups.
They're vintage Hasbro quality. They were made in the same factories, etc. So, no difference between them and Hasbro figures of the same era. As they were '94-ish, the elbows can fade and crack. Bludd's seem to be holding up worse than Flints. But, carded versions should still be cheap enough to warrant opening one up.
