General Flagg isn't a figure you see all that often in Joe content. But, when you do find him used, it's almost always the 1992 version of the figure. Or, it's his 2004 Comic Pack figure. The 1993 variant wearing the black coat is a rare sight in Joe photography. This is partly due to the fact that the figure is fairly obscure. And, it's also partly due to the fact that General Flagg is, generally, considered an early Joe character. So, his bulkier sculpt figure from 1992 and 1993 just doesn't mesh well with 1982 and 1983 figures. The mismatching brown hat against the black coat doesn't serve him well, either.
While I like this figure a lot, the reality is that I struggle to take good photos of him. And, in my multiple attempts at writing about him, I usually fall short in making any significant point. The figure, in the end, is just kind of there. He's really neat to own. But, he's tough to integrate into a story or make the focal point of a photo. So, there's not a ton of content on him out there. But, enjoy what I could find.

This figure and it’s repaint have always struck me as getting named Flagg at the last minute. The TBC Hawk looks more like Flagg, and these look more like Hawk
ReplyDeleteAs '92 was a reboot year, it seems likely. Kind of like they forgot they released 2 Hawks the prior year and had to quickly rename him into something different. Even his filecard seems a bit hack-y, even for a 1992 design.

DeleteI want to hear more theories about figures that were supposed to be other characters. Was Metal Head supposed to be Scrap Iron? Was Night Vulture going to be another Snake Eyes? Was Stretcher going to be Doc? Or even if they weren't...should they have been?
DeleteSince the Collector's Club used a lot of grey in during the latter years of its existence, I have a hard time seeing the 93 Version of Flaggy as a mainline release. My brain thinks of him as a Club figure.
ReplyDeleteIdentity issues about the figure/character aside, I've always liked this guy. The 1992 version is fine, but a bit bland. The black jacket and pops of gray make the figure more eye-catching (while allowing him to still remain grounded/realistic). He's worth owning
