2022 SDCC Carded Skystriker Figures

I was really hoping these figures would be released on the old resealable bubble cards that were used for convention figures.  You'll have to tear up the cards to get a set of loose figures, which is what I'm after.  So, that kind of sucks for loose collectors.

The artwork on the never before carded figures looks pretty weak, though.  It's similar to the fan art inspired stuff we see on Super7 cards.  It's definitely lost the feel of the vintage work.  It's just a bunch of guys (and one girl) standing around.  Meh.  These will definitely look out of place among either vintage carded figures and even the 2022 releases that were based on the standard vintage artwork.

But, these will resell for stupid amounts.  I'm guessing over $300 easy for the Cobra Commander, maybe higher if the vintage market hasn't cratered by the time this is released.  But, man, is his artwork weak.  It's really amazing how much the Ripcord artwork (which is based on the vintage) stands out among the rest of the statues.

  1. The artwork being poor makes the decision to remove them from the cards a lot easier.

Does anyone actually tear up cards to open them anymore? When we were kids, sure, it seemed like the only way to get the bubble off was to peel it off the backer, destroying the art behind it. But I'd assume any adult collector would have enough sense now to carefully cut it off with an X-Acto knife.

    1. Tear up was harsh. :)

But, my main issue is that once you open these up, there's no going back.

  2. Will the card backs be as thin as the one from the Cobra Officer/Trooper 2 packs? They were Funskool thick. They'll probably separate naturally...

  3. Why will CC be over $300? Right now ebay has the vehicle with all tiers at $400. Do Haslabs all get like quadruple the value upon release?

    1. Typically, they double or triple in value upon release. Especially things like figures. For some reason, MMCC holds a massive sway over people. So, this one will go high, especially if Hasbro only releases the standard logo in the more cartoon styled colors.

If you didn't order one, the $400 price is probably pretty good. Haslab carded Star Wars figures run in the $75-$150 range and they are barely repaints of current figures. Now that people see these Joes will have their own cards and not the generic cards shown in the original proposal, I'd expect interest in them to also increase.

  4. Oh yeah.... I'm de-carding these figures when they arrive in the mail. (Maybe not NF Rippy; we'll see.) I fully expect the cardbacks to be flimsy and filled with five to eight languages. 🤷‍♂️🤷‍♂️ Not worth keeping, saving, or displaying.

    1. Cardback images that appeared today show that the filecards appear to be in English only.

    1. I'm hoping to be able to recoup at least $100 for the Skystriker itself. (I'll probably have to wait a few months after release, though.) That makes it better. But, it's also a hassle and not a guarantee.

    2. That's about as close to a sure thing as you're likely to get, though.
