I really like the 1993 Beach Head. I find the design fun and the colors work. Despite this, I find it difficult to use the figure all that often. This is mainly due to the heavy use of blue in the coloring. It makes him Cobra adjacent and prevents him from meshing well with many other figures. I've long liked him as a crew member on the 1984 Whale hovercraft. But, I haven't had mine out in more than a decade. So, I'm left trying to match up the figure with some of the vehicles that I do have available. And, the results never live up to the idea of this Beach Head that I have in my head.
The figure could use one more paint mask. A little silver would to a long way towards bringing out the details on the mold. Even a paint mask on his goggles would add a lot to the head. But, I still like the figure as it is. I long used him as an army builder. But, those days are passed and I mostly just pose him as Beach Head among some of his contemporary figures.

It’s funny, there’s maybe a dozen figures in all of G.I. Joe I’ve never seen in person, and this mold might be the one I’m most bothered by not ever seeing.
ReplyDeleteI think this figure, and the 92 Firefly being given the codenames they were, were one of the biggest indictments of 1990s G.I. Joe with the fanbase of the late 90s-early 2000s. Both of whom, would’ve been really well received if they had gotten a decent repaint (‘98 or convention set)
At this point Cobra blue was out the window and it seemed to be Cobra purple/pink.
ReplyDeleteI don't have a problem with giving a character new look, if it work. I'd say it arguably works here, but strange that it was shipped with Iceberg V1 who seems more like an Arctic Beach-Head (dark skin aside).
But the problems with this release are:
1. Lack of/limited paint ops that hurt quite a few releases.
2. Lack of individual accessories.
3. Reuse of older body parts, which is something Hasbro did often before, but with Battle Corps it seemed every other new figure had reused leg/waist pieces. Here Beach-Head reminds one of Shockwave V1 because they have got the same leg molds.
It was an issue with BATTLES CORPS in general, that GI JOE figures became more generic, more like THE CORPS, whom Lanard sued Hasbro over the use of CORPS. (Ironics since Corps were once Gung-Ho! before Hasbro made them stop.)
