Haslab Skystriker - Funded!

So, on 12/6, the Rancor failed.  Despite a strong last minute surge, it still fell about 500 backers short.  Instantely, this lead to doom and gloom among the Joe groups that the Skystriker was sure to fail, too.  And, at about 85% heading into the final day, it was kind of a possibility.  But, as we neared 12 hours before the funding deadline, the backers suddenly surged.  Over 600 Skystrikers were backed in under an hour.  And, the next hour saw over 400 more.  Slowly, the counter climbed over 98%, over 99%.  And, then, it stopped.  There was a major Amazon Web Services outage on this day.  And, the counter got stuck at 9924.

But, after a while, it jumped and the Skystriker was fully funded with about 8 hours to go.  From there, the numbers continued to climb.  Historically, about 2/3 of the orders for a Haslab are placed in the final 2 days.  But, the failure of the Rancor and the quick funding of the Ghostbusters Pack put some of that historical context in doubt.  The various Joe forums were full of gloom about the Skystriker's fate.  More collectors than you would think took up a schadenfreude approach and took glee in the impending doom.  But, as the numbers rose, those posts and comments started to disappear.  For a moment some of the toxicity of Joe fandom was beaten back in shared accomplishment that will bring some desired toys to the collecting world.

Now, the Skystriker is happening.  It's the most ambitious Joe toy since at least 2005 and, maybe, since 1993.  It's also a telling milestone.  We know that vintage style Joes are making some kind of a return in 2022 for the 40th Anniversary of the line.  To see a flagship toy get produced by a collector base that's still firmly stuck in the "wait for Ross" mentality gives me hope that a retail Joe line will get a little more of a marketing nudge than it might otherwise have.

Around 3 hours away from the funding mark, the Skystriker passed the Scarlett tier of 13,000 units backed.  This means that pilot Scarlett will be made and it makes this Haslab a better than retail cost proposition.  In the last 90 minutes of the campaign, though, there was a final surge.  And, the Skystriker's final number was 16,784 units backed.  This meant that not only was Scarlett unlocked, but Ripcord, too.  So, the final product will include 7 figures, the plane and the deck vehicles.  Not too bad when you consider what the aftermarket pricing on the figures will be.

In the end, 12/7 was as much fun as February 15th, 2002: the date that the internet exclusive Wave V debuted at online retailers and the entire Joe world was united in their desire to get them and the frustrations as ambiguity set in.  Days like that are rare in the Joe world.  Nearly 20 years between two dates is a lot.  But, for now, there's something to be happy about in regards to Joe.  When those two huge boxes show up at my door sometime in 2023, though, we'll see how the happiness lasts as I try to explain $500 in toy airplanes to my wife.

  1. I look forward to 2023, when all the complainers who whined and moaned about the $230 Haslab pricing and stubbornly refused to support a Hasbro crowdfunding project regret their decision and pay $500 or more for the same jet on eBay (minus the figures, which they'll have to buy separately for another couple hundred dollars).

    1. I already see people rationalizing it by saying the figures will be on Hasbro Pulse or excess Skystrikers will be retail price at BBTS in 2023. Just...no. I'm sure we'll get a retail Cobra Commander. I'm equally sure we'll never seen the Mickey Mouse version again. Same with the other color schemes in this set. Worst case scenario is that these are $50 figures at release. More likely, all but Ace will be $80-$100 with MMCC probably double that.

  2. I'm happy for you, but crowd funding collecting is the worst trend of all time. (Some hyperbole)
    - It leads the blame game when things don't get funded.
    - The risk and waiting game is placed mostly on the buyer.
    - By the time they arrive, life priorities might be different (By 2023 we could be in World War 3!)
    - You have things that would've been offered on their own thrown in as stretch goals, frustrating people who didn't want the vehicle/whole package. LOOKING AT YOU, "MICKEY MOUSE CC". And the "just sell what you don't want" does do much good now when you have to pay $230 and wait 18 months.
    - Figure collectors only, and those who want one to open, one to let rot in package...double frustrated.
    - ROSS misses out on sales. (Do they still get stuff? None here. Just Marshalls and TJ Maxx and they dried up so much I rarely check them)
    - I loathe the idea of launching a new retro or anything with a go-fund-me or an exclusive. (Like Mattel did with their first Origins offering for some convention). Because not having any previous offerings in hand, you don't know what your getting into.

So, I hope folks take some great pictures. I hope the quality is there. I hope things like this are rare. One a year at most, and for something MORE meaningful than a twice molded F-14. The top 20 things I would have them make or remake, Sky Striker would not be on the list. I'd just say "fix the Modern one back to a 2 seater and call it day."

    1. I am not a fan of the HasLab model, either. I like to just plunk down money and get it in the mail a few days later. It's why I don't pre-order toys. But, I've also seen Hasbro do this long enough to know that it's now a necessary evil if there's something you want. I don't care about the plane. I do care about the figures. And, were these anniversary style, you'd have heard nary a word from me.

We have seen that Hasbro seems to hit each property about once a year. So, I wouldn't expect another for a while. But, the days of large vehicles/playsets at retail are mostly over. (Unless you make them as a toy like Fortnight and Spinmaster are doing.) Hasbro's found something that people will support. It makes no sense. But, for Hasbro it's really an all in scenario. And, since the Barge got funded, it also means that Haslabs are a reality for any vintage property collector.

It's turning collecting into a rich man's game. And, I'm not OK with that, either. At some point, it will price me out. And, I'll be a bitter, bitter collector at that point! (Worse than I am, now.)

    2. The Collectors Club turned it into a rich man's game when they started doing 3 3/4" convention sets that increased in price every year AND added more and more attendee only items until it was $1000 a year plus attending the damn convention. By then it was Modern Era. (It's sort of hilarious that the 'nusculpts' never got a con set!)
I'd support a Haslab any day over a revival of a Collector's Club method, even with a longer wait.

    3. Very true. And, anything that prevents the club from ever coming back is good.

  3. Congratulations to the Joe community for getting this done. Who knows, now that a mold will be made, this version might be reissued in the future. I really want to cry sour grapes because I didn't get one, but quite honestly the white two seater fighter jet I got from Dollar General for 15 bucks is good enough for me, it even lights up and makes sound something I don't think this Sky Striker does. This was cool, just not 230 dollars cool for me to get on board. Had it been a WHALE or even a Mauler, I might have been a lot more interested. None of the o-ring figures were very enticing for me either, so the package as a whole was a big "meh" for me.

  4. The figures got me to do it, and I got two, hoping the second will pay for both. But I really thought the Whale was the vehicle to make.

  5. Does anyone really think they'll get what's shown in the digital renders? Hasbro has never released that helmeted CC since the original. Do they even have the mold? Do we really expect them to recreate it, instead of just including an armored CC instead and calling it good?

    1. Re molding figures is a lot less expensive than it used to be. See the Star Wars Retro figures as an example. We'll get the figures shown for sure with just slight variances based on differences between real plastic and digital renders.

Hasbro destroyed all the vintage molds. Every single figure is an entirely new sculpt.

    2. Huh. Nice. Maybe we can finally get a re-release of v2 Snake Eyes!

  6. New CC mold = Hooded CC and Red Laser!
