The 1994 Metal Head is one of those figures that I just like. I use him way more often than his popularity should suggest. But, his colors and sculpt make for a great combo. The silver, purple and black work perfectly together. And, his head sculpt is one of the most distinctive in the line's history. The figure doesn't have the bulk of some other 1994 releases, either. So, it blends nicely with earlier figures from the line.
On top of that, this Metal Head was one of the few Cobras I was able to find at retail back in the mid 1990's. So, he's been around a while and I have a nostalgic attachment to him. I still remember seeing him in 1994 and thinking "they're already doing a new Metal Head?" Honestly, though, I feel like the 1994 version was a big improvement over the 1990 one (the original was a good concept with a decent follow through, but he didn't quite stick the landing). The 1994 version is nice, in that you get a more expressive face and you don't have to worry about breaking off the fragile leg posts if you're using the earlier variant of the 1990 version (of course, the fact that the 1994 version uses the Rock Viper lower body means that you have to worry about breaking that fragile crotch). I also love the torso armor of the 1994 version and the added depth that it gives around the neck area.
ReplyDeleteThe obvious drawback with the 1994 version is, if course, the lack of any specialized gear. I'd love to see how the 1990 version's backpack looks on this version (maybe painted silver).
Definitely better than the first ironically the crazy grin is probably because of the DiC series more than anything else.
