1990 SAW Viper - Around The Web

I figured the SAW Viper would have a ton of content featuring the figure.  He's a major player in the Joe universe.  And, his scenes are relatively memorable.  I was right about there being a good amount of content on him.  But, not a lot of it focuses on the character's seminal moment.  That's OK, though, since there's still so much that can be done with the figure.  And, you'll see a good bit of it in the links below.

  1. The DTC version with removable helmet is pretty cool, actually.

  2. The Saw Viper is much like the Frag Viper and Range Viper.

Not needed as a Cobra, and extremely ugly figure.

    Anyone else agree?

    1. I disagree. Elements of all their designs are usable or servicable.
SAW-Viper was let down by an oversized gun, purple/fuschia colors and hip wader boots that make no sense (why are they cut out in the middle?)
Frag-Viper is acceptable specialist, but given a questionable method of grenade delivery. His web gear is unnecessarily odd and the helmet makes more sense if one thinks if has range finders and a built in gas mask,
Range Viper's skull mask goofy? Except now places make "armored" face masks as strange, though more suited for paintball than combat.

    2. I agree that Frag Viper is a hideous mess (a flesh colored jumpsuit and jai alai scoop?). The green Letal version is a million times better.

Range Viper is pretty ugly too; the mustard yellow accents are terrible, and the weird/gruesome mask is a bit off-putting. He has great accessories though. I actually have a bit of a soft spot for him due to the DIC cartoon. The Rock Viper repaint is perhaps a better execution.

SAW Viper I thought was cool from the instant I saw him. Cool helmet, cool gun, cool armored chest, and arguably appropriate colors for Cobra. At least purple is normal for more technical specialties; maybe a 'machine" gun counts as technical? :)

    3. they're better than most of the Cobra characters who were introduced after Series 3. just like pretty much every trooper figure.
