Back in late 2000, Hasbro dropped the second wave of the A Real American Hero collection. I'd argue now that it was actually better than the first wave as it included a ton of molds collectors had yet to see and they, mostly, included all their original gear. I'm hard pressed to really pick which of the 6 figures in the wave is the best. But, the Ambush repaint renamed as Sidetrack is easily up there. It's a great mold from the 1990's that was hugely under-appreciated at the time and was colored significantly differently from the original figure. Here's the best of Sidetrack from around the web.

Yeah - Love this guy, but his BP broke on him day one - Peg snapped stuck in his back! Still, I got the 2-pack for $5 at a flea, and took some fun picks with his card-mate Duke when I went to upstate NY a couple years ago.

DeleteUnlike Ambush could hold his bullpup style rifle decently thanks to soft plastic hands.
ReplyDeleteThe weak aspect is is the character, as no amount of colors changed can separate him from Ambush.
Here's a updated link for General's Joes(Now "General's Joes Reborn") on their review of Sidetrack:

Interesting that they didn't make him Ambush. And to make sure that they meant for Sidetrack to be different from Ambush, Sidetrack's real name is Sean C. McLaughlin, while Ambush's real name is Aaron McMahon. Surprised that they didn't just do the same thing when Roadblock was temporary call Double Blast and General Hawk was temporary name General Tomahawk at around same timeframe, and just used him as a re-code name Ambush, with his real name Aaron intact.
Having said that, if you use Sidetrack as just a different colour Ambush, you can always say that Ambush went further and not only changed his code name, but his real name and hair colour as well. Not sure if the Sidetrack and Duke 2 Pack is 1 that I'd ever go after. But If I ever got this 2 Pack, not sure if I'd keep him as Sidetrack or use him as Ambush. I suppose by keeping him as Sidetrack, it would just force me to try and get an Ambush as well, even if they look very similar. Though I could always also say that Ambush and Sidetrack are long lost distant cousins or step brothers as well, which is why they look similar to each other.
